The Best Advice

I am often asked for nutrition, diet and running advice. I take it very seriously when someone asks my advice.  I know that the times in the past when I’ve asked others for advice I was really anxious for help. I started to think about the best advice that I’ve ever been given on this. I truly believe the best advice is not given with words, but shown by example. I heartily believe in leading by example and my favorite blogs are the ones by women and men who live a healthy, balanced life and don’t feel the need to apologize for or justify what they do.

I am still in the process of becoming an Intuitive Eater, so my choices are not always the best, but I do strive to live a balanced life – whatever that means for me. I am aiming for progress, not perfection and think I am making progress everyday. I try to lead by example 🙂 But, since my BFF has been asking for advice I’ve been very philosophical about quotes. Caitlin actually posted about quotes this morning and I started thinking about my favorite quotes! Then, I came across this one today on Twitter:

GreatestQuotes“Conquer your bad habits or they will conquer you.” – Rob Gilbert

It’s funny how sometimes you come across exactly what you need to hear at just the right time! This is very motivating to me right now. I am trying my hardest to conquer my bad habit of tired/emotional/bored eating. This is just the mantra I need to repeat to myself when I am in that situation.

Question: Do you have a quote you tell yourself when you need motivation or have a problem?

Me: I’m going with the one above for now! But I also have a running quote I sometimes tell myself on long runs…

“All your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you’re not good enough or strong enough or talented enough. They will say you’re the wrong height or the wrong weight or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this. They will tell you No, a thousand times no, until all the no’s become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly. And you will tell them Yes

Now I need a good life in general quote! The search continues…

Lunch was boring! I really need to switch it up. But, after dinner when I make my sammie my sweet tooth is alert and all I want is something sweet so I end up making a sweet sandwich = PB&J. I’ve been thinking about eating a half a PB&J for a snack so I can enjoy more savory and filling food for lunch. IMG_0993I am now snacking on some pretzels because I feel hungry and I just ate lunch! IMG_0995I definitely need to pack something different for the rest of the week! I promise I am going to have something besides PB&J for the rest of the week!

In other exciting news I am taking 2 courses toward  a Nutrition for Optimal Health and Wellness Certificate! They begin tomorrow! Yeah!

Running in the Dark

I was Running in the Dark today because I had to wake up super early to get to work on time. I left for my run at 5:30am – which I’ve done before, but for some reason the sun was making no attempts to rise yet!

I was actually scared because it was so dark! I couldn’t even see the lines on the sidewalk – which is dangerous because in some places it’s very uneven.

Here are some tips for Running in the Dark:

  • Wear light/bright/reflective clothing. A lot of running shirts, shorts and shoes have reflective strips. Make sure your geared up with light colors.
  • Don’t run in “la-la land”. Pay attention – cars may not see you, you have to watch out for them.
  • Bring a flashlight or wear a light. In my case I couldn’t see the bumps in the sidewalk, a flashlight would have helped. Hats with lights built in are available too.
  • Stay on the sidewalk or paths. Streets + Dark + Runner = Bad Idea

This morning was surprisingly cool – which I enjoyed 🙂 It was a nice break from the sticky humidity that I am not used to yet!

Since it was cool I thought warm oatmeal would be a good idea. Wrong. For some reason hot oats in the summer just make me feel sick. Ugh. I think my body gets super heated up from my run and adding something hot and dense to my stomach sits like a brick. Weird.

I’ve got to go because I still have this mess to clean up…I dropped the container of oats when I went to grab them off the fridge. What a way to start my Monday. I should have taken it as a sign that oats were a bad idea!

Have a great day, see you in a bit 🙂

Spider Catcher

One time Ben wanted to give me some advice about running. He is not a runner, but I thought whatever he had to say might be helpful since he’s super smart:)

Ben’s advice: “You never want to be the first runner of the day.”

Me: “Why?”

Ben: “Because then you’re the spider catcher.”

Well, I was the spider catcher today because I was running in the dark at 5:30am this morning! I have to change my morning running schedule because Ben and I carpool and he needs to be at work by 8am. So, I had to wake up at 5 this morning to run 5 miles. I am exhausted! So I think I deserve this:2009-08-03 08.26.10

Breakfast was oatmeal in a jar. I finally remembered not to scrape my jar of nut butter clean so I could use it for oats 🙂 But, my picture didn’t save in this draft and I can’t find it. Wtf.

About the carpooling…we left my car in CA to see if we could just live with one car. We are going to give it a couple of weeks and see how it works. So, for now I have to wake up at 5am to get in a run on weekdays. It’s probably for the best because I beat the heat, but it also means I need to get in bed by 9am (it’s a goal).
