The Best Advice

I am often asked for nutrition, diet and running advice. I take it very seriously when someone asks my advice.Β  I know that the times in the past when I’ve asked others for advice I was really anxious for help. I started to think about the best advice that I’ve ever been given on this. I truly believe the best advice is not given with words, but shown by example. I heartily believe in leading by example and my favorite blogs are the ones by women and men who live a healthy, balanced life and don’t feel the need to apologize for or justify what they do.

I am still in the process of becoming an Intuitive Eater, so my choices are not always the best, but I do strive to live a balanced life – whatever that means for me. I am aiming for progress, not perfection and think I am making progress everyday. I try to lead by example πŸ™‚ But, since my BFF has been asking for advice I’ve been very philosophical about quotes. Caitlin actually posted about quotes this morning and I started thinking about my favorite quotes! Then, I came across this one today on Twitter:

GreatestQuotes“Conquer your bad habits or they will conquer you.” – Rob Gilbert

It’s funny how sometimes you come across exactly what you need to hear at just the right time! This is very motivating to me right now. I am trying my hardest to conquer my bad habit of tired/emotional/bored eating. This is just the mantra I need to repeat to myself when I am in that situation.

Question: Do you have a quote you tell yourself when you need motivation or have a problem?

Me: I’m going with the one above for now! But I also have a running quote I sometimes tell myself on long runs…

β€œAll your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you’re not good enough or strong enough or talented enough. They will say you’re the wrong height or the wrong weight or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this. They will tell you No, a thousand times no, until all the no’s become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly. And you will tell them Yesβ€œ

Now I need a good life in general quote! The search continues…

Lunch was boring! I really need to switch it up. But, after dinner when I make my sammie my sweet tooth is alert and all I want is something sweet so I end up making a sweet sandwich = PB&J. I’ve been thinking about eating a half a PB&J for a snack so I can enjoy more savory and filling food for lunch. IMG_0993I am now snacking on some pretzels because I feel hungry and I just ate lunch! IMG_0995I definitely need to pack something different for the rest of the week! I promise I am going to have something besides PB&J for the rest of the week!

In other exciting news I am taking 2 courses towardΒ  a Nutrition for Optimal Health and Wellness Certificate! They begin tomorrow! Yeah!

Brisk Monday

Both the weather and my run were brisk today. The weather was cool and invigorating and the run was quick πŸ™‚ I double checked and “brisk” can be defined many ways including…

1 : keenly alert : lively
2 a : pleasingly tangy <brisk tea> b : fresh, invigorating <brisk weather>
3 : sharp in tone or manner
4 a : energetic, quick <a brisk pace> b : marked by much activity <business was brisk>

My Marathon Training Plan called for 1 mile warm up, 4x 800s (1min Rest in between)Β  1 mile cool down. I am not the biggest fan of speed work, but this was short so it wasn’t too bad πŸ™‚

I made Overnight Oats last night and took them out of the fridge before I left for my run so they wouldn’t be too cold. IMG_0989

Topped with granola and PB – deelish!IMG_0984

In case you haven’t heard, it’s Monday. This means a fresh clean slate…a week of great runs, accomplishing a lot at work, new blog posts and more. Let’s make it great!

Sunday Snack-down

I always snack my way through the weekend. It’s due to a couple of things…I usually eat breakfast late so I’m not hungry at “lunch time”. Then, I have a snack (or three) and have dinner and dessert. I actually don’t mind it, but the trouble comes when I think I should eat lunch or dinner even though I’m not hungry.

I ate grapes, a few chips with hummus and more Pirate’s Booty through out the afternoon. Come dinner time I wasn’t hungry, but figured I should eat. I made a BIG salad topped with hummus.IMG_0975Look how colorful my salad is with my very colorful place mats!IMG_0976

Baked potato on the side (with ketchup!)IMG_0979*Next time I’ll make a small salad and hold the sidesΒ  if I really feel like I want to eat with Ben when I’m not hungry.

I really wanted to bake cookies for dessert, but I need Ben to light the pilot light to do that and he was caught up in something else. I really need to teach myself how to do that, but I’m scared.

Other things I’m scared of:

  • The dark (seriously)
  • WWIII
  • Spiders, bugs in general actually
  • Getting injured
  • Falling asleep in church and farting really loud

So, I ended up makes a fruit plate – BORE-RING! IMG_0982I am sad that Sunday is coming to a close 😦 It was a great weekend though! Both Saturday and Sunday were gorgeous days and I feel like I got a lot accomplished πŸ™‚

Butter is Back

Pumpkin Butter that is! TJ’s Pumpkin Butter is back out. It’s a seasonal item and I completely love it! I put it on toast, plain yogurt and more! Get some, seriously – it’s better than this blog, stop reading and go!DSCN2006

Sunday is a Rest Day. Ben and I did some elliptical this morning. It’s nice to have someone to workout with sometimes πŸ™‚

I’ve been wanted French Toast for a while and have to wait for the weekend to actually make it. I happily made French Toast today!DSCN1995

I topped it with a mix of mashed up banana, PB and maple syrup. Delicious!DSCN1997

Since we’re new to the area we’ve been “Church Shopping” on Sundays. We’ve been to 4 different churches now and still haven’t found that clicks. The search continues…

After church we went to Costco and TJ’s. Is it sad that I have been looking forward to this all week? I ate a bunch of samples and a bunch of this Costco style “Pirate’s Booty”. Ben wanted this stuff, I’ve actually been avoiding it when I visit Costco since this is one of those foods that I just eat and eat and eat….DSCN2002

Ben and I always joke about the Nutella at Costco. It is two containers of it! Another Dangerous food = A Costco size container of Nutella x2! To our credit, we didn’t buy it 😦 It’s for the best….DSCN2000

I just enjoyed a big smoothie with granola (more granola than shown). And some grapes (no pic).DSCN2004

Now it’s time for some cleaning and relaxing πŸ™‚ Hope you’re having a happy Sunday!

Day at the Museum

Ben and I went into DC today to sight see. It was the most gorgeous day! Love it!

We hit up the Natural History Museum and the Jefferson Memorial. The (ONE) thing I like about living in Maryland is having so many great museums and sights so close to us! I have always loved DC and am really going to try and see as much as I can while here πŸ™‚IMG_0943IMG_0954

We stopped and got a Honey Crisp Apple. These are amazing – I wish they weren’t so expensive!DSCN1991

Lunch on the road…PB&J, carrots. I knew we would be eating out for dinner and didn’t want to do that for lunch too!DSCN1994

We went out for Indian Food for dinner. I love this stuff! We started with a mixed appetizer plate. It didn’t describe what the mixed appetizers were – turns out all the fried stuff 😦 The samosa was really good and I ate some of the other stuff too.IMG_0962

I ordered Chan Masala, Rice and Naan. The waiter served us each of the dishes as he brought them to the table. He insisted on putting some of Ben’s lamb on my plate. I tried to tell him I didn’t want any, but there was a language barrier and he insisted it was good. I took the pic and then gave it to Ben πŸ™‚ IMG_0968

I’m currently blogging and enjoying some TJ’s tart frozen yogurt with granola πŸ™‚ Good night!IMG_0973This is not poop! Ben was eating trail mix in the car and dropped some chocolate chips on his seat. I guess they melted and then he sat in it 😦 We don’t know when it happened or how long he was walking around like this…IMG_0970

Ben’s Random Comment of the Day:

Ben: “The Panda is the direct opposite of everything I am.”

Me: “What do you mean?”

Ben: “He only eats vegetables and refuses to have sex.”

Egg Scramble & 12 miler

12 miles in 1:52:something this morning πŸ™‚ I felt good, but I’m still having trouble with the hills. I have gotten a lot slower since moving to MD and I have to blame the hills!

When I got back Ben was making an egg/ham and cheese sandwich. It smelled so good! I decided to make an egg scramble sandwich. I used spinach, mushrooms, garlic and cheese. Mixing veggies with eggs is the best way to get veggies in at breakfast! I ate the extra scramble on the side. DSCN1989DSCN1987

We are out of fruit and really need to get to the store! Be back later πŸ™‚

Funger

“Funger” is my word for when you eat something, not for Hunger, but for Fun. I think most of the time you should only eat for hunger (I’m working on that part), but sometimes you eat for “Fun-ger”. Example: At a birthday party – you may have cake even though you’re full or ice cream on a hot summer day hits the spot.

One time an RD told me – “We don’t eat ice cream because we’re hungry, we eat it because it tastes good.” That makes a lot of sense, but I am still learning about all this Intuitive Eating stuff and it’s not easy to deal with.IMG_0902

After dinner Ben wanted frozen yogurt and that never happens! I am normally the one suggesting it! So, I didn’t want to turn it down even though I was full. I decided to go and enjoy it πŸ™‚ I went all out and got chocolate with 3 toppings!

The reason I was so full started with this guy – I tried the Choc Peanut Butter bar from Amazing Grass. I meant to only eat half of it, but I was enjoying it so I ate the who thing. The bar, along with some grapes kept me full for a very long time! I ate it around 3:15pm and was not even hungry when dinner was ready at 6:45pm – that NEVER HAPPENS!IMG_0905

I think the reason I stayed full was 1.) The bar has 270 calories (with the grapes this was a high calorie snack) 2.) It has 12g protein. Wow. This is more than I’d like to eat for a snack, but it did teach me a lesson. If I eat a BIG SNACK I am not as tempted to snack at home. I had no desire to eat when I got home at all – that NEVER HAPPENS either!

Dinner was a tofu stir-fry with brown rice.Β  I finally got the chance to break in our new wok. It was one of our wedding gifts! The wok had special instructions for first time use – including heating it dry and wiping it with oil. Heating it dry made it burn and get a big brown spot on the bottom. This is the first time I’ve used it and now it’s jacked up! Oh well, it still makes delicious food πŸ™‚IMG_0888

I stir-fried up the tofu with garlic then added teriyaki and veggies. Tofu + veggies + brown rice = one of my favorite meals of all time!!!IMG_0895

I am pretty sure my camera is dead, but thank you guys for the suggestions!

Someone on top of us is playing Rock Band and I need to get some sleep! I am tired from a full week back at work! Wasn’t it just yesterday I was relaxing in Belize, good times πŸ˜‰

I think Ben has something planned for us tomorrow – should be great!
